NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee jury has convicted six anti-abortion protesters of violating federal laws after they blocked the entrance of a reproductive clinic outside Nashville nearly three years ago. Before Roe was overturned, the Justice Department oversaw just a handful of FACE Act violation cases. Advocates like the National Abortion Federation say the uptick in cases reflects the rise in harassment and violence abortion clinics have faced since state abortion bans have been allowed to go into effect. Some have called on the Justice Department to apply the 1994 federal law more equitably and use it to investigate those who target crisis pregnancy centers. President Bill Clinton signed the FACE Act into law in 1994 following a string of high-profile attacks against abortion clinics, which included Dr. David Gunn being shot and killed outside an abortion clinic in Pensacola, Florida in 1993 — marking the first abortion provider killed in the U.S.

[1/2] The U.S. Supreme Court building is seen in Washington, U.S., August 31, 2023. The lower court rejected the argument made by the defendants that with the secret recording they were exercising their right to free speech under the U.S. Constitution. Various activist groups on the left and right conduct undercover operations often involving secret recording. Planned Parenthood has said the defendants are "ideological activists" - not journalists - whose videos were heavily edited as part of a smear campaign aimed at destroying the organization. Using a shell company and fake identification, the activists gained access to Planned Parenthood and National Abortion Federation conferences and other locations where they recorded staff using hidden cameras.

The midterms proved that voters want to defend abortion access. Smith told Insider that, like many others, while she eagerly awaited the midterm results, the young man popped into her head. Timmaraju told Insider that they'd shifted resources over the summer into getting out the vote. "I think the moral of the story is young voters and women voters saved the day, saved Democrats." Melissa Fowler, the chief program officer of the National Abortion Federation, told Insider that, "Now the country has heard loud and clear that people support abortion access.
Hundreds of pilots are volunteering to fly abortion patients across state lines, The Guardian reported. It pairs patients in states with little or no access to reproductive healthcare with volunteer pilots. The initiative experienced a significant uptick in volunteer pilots after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, the newspaper said. Elevate Access was set up to address the fact that traveling across state lines can be costly, risky, and time-consuming, according to The Guardian. The flying costs are covered by the volunteer pilots, who must undergo a background check, and the trips are free for passengers, according to The Guardian.
